It seems Tampermonkey is broken on the latest Edge Dev build. However, it works fine on the Beta and Stable channels, provided that Developer Mode is toggled on at edge://extensions/.
Violentmonkey remains my top pick, so it's a solid choice to stick with for now.

Great script. I have been missing this since the "google search tools back" scripts stopped working.
I couldn't get this to work with Tampermonkey in Edge, but it worked flawlessly with ViolentMonkey.
