Is it possible to add an option to get a bigger image only on hover?

that seems pretty complicated to implement and is not the direction I want to go in.
However, there might be good alternatives out there for you. There are multiple scripts that do stuff like that.
Maybe try this script for example https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/394820-mouseover-popup-image-viewer
