YouTube CRT Overlay

YouTube CRT Overlay is a lightweight UserScript that applies CRT aesthetic to YouTube videos.

Unlike complex WebGL shaders, this script uses high-performance CSS overlays and filters.

Features

  • Scanlines: Simulates the horizontal raster lines of old televisions using a repeating gradient.
  • Vignette: Darkens the corners of the video player to mimic the curvature and light falloff of a tube screen.
  • RGB Subpixel Hinting: Adds very subtle vertical RGB lines to simulate the phosphor mask.
  • Phosphor Glow: Applies a specific combination of blur (0.6px), saturation (1.2), and high contrast (1.3) to mimic the bleeding light of a CRT.
  • Performance Friendly: Uses GPU-accelerated CSS mix-blend-mode and pointer-events: none, ensuring the video controls remain clickable and the browser doesn't lag.

Configuration

If you want to adjust the intensity of the effect, you can edit the script values:

  • To remove the blur: Delete blur(0.6px) from line 34.
  • To make scanlines darker: Increase the alpha value in rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.25) on line 48.
